Syphilis is a sexually transmissible infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It can affect all genders. Syphilis is currently more common amongst men who have sex with men. If left untreated it can have serious long term effects.
How it spreads
Syphilis is spread through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area or oral, vaginal or anal sex without a condom.
Symptoms
Symptoms are not always noticed and a blood test is usually required to identify infected individuals. A single, painless, clear ulcer may appear on the genitals. After a few weeks, glands in the groin will enlarge; a rash on the body and flu-like symptoms usually follow several weeks later.
Complications
If left untreated, a person may develop cardiovascular syphilis after 10-30 years. This can result in aneurysm formation.
How to avoid it
Condoms reduce the risk, but only protect the skin that is covered.
Treatment
Antibiotic injections.
