in 1987 Oprah Winfrey visited the town of Williamson, West Virginia amidst community fears sparked by a HIV positive man using a public pool. This video, from Oprah's 20th anniversary series includes shocking footage from the original 1987 recording.
This video is an example of the stigma and discrimination that exists around HIV/AIDS. This is a particularly powerful video, as it is from 1987, when there was a great deal of uncertainty and fear around the relatively new HIV/AIDs epidemic.
Even though the footage is over 20 years old now, it is still a relevant to discussions around sexualised stigma and prejudice and a good starting point for discussions about how community attitudes to HIV have (and have not) changed over time.
