- All About YEAH
There’s something a little bit special about your first time. Perth’s YEAH agents saw no exception in our first official event at Curtin University’s O’Day.
As usual, Perth turned up the heat, though despite the conditions the campus was buzzing with students throughout the day. Six of our YEAH agents manned the stall (seven, if you include everyone’s favourite, Big Red) with condom badges, stickers, STI plush toys, fact booklets and the crowd pleasing condom tins.
The reception was largely positive, with a number of keen new sign-ups to get involved in the Red Aware campaign, as well as a lot of interaction and conversation about safe sex. As always, the condom demonstrations drew a crowd, and some laughs as well. One student wore his condom badge with so much pride for the rest of the afternoon that he relayed that had received countless compliments and even some offers to trade for other merchandise! The deceptively adorable STI toys also proved a hit, though most agreed that they were much cuter before they knew what each toy represented…
Curtin University has Australia’s third largest international student population, and it was a great opportunity to speak to the group of students that are sometimes difficult to reach. It is always interesting to see the difference in reaction to the YEAH stall between international and domestic students. The international students visiting our stand were much more timid, especially when receiving YEAH paraphernalia. That being said, one Perth Agent recounted a positive experience whereby she was able to dispel the myth about the pill as a protection against STIs for an international student, and enjoyed a conversation about contraception and barrier methods.
The Curtin O’Day experience was a great way to interact with a sizable and diverse group of young people, and we received much positive feedback about the effectiveness of peer educators for promoting sexual health. It is exciting to have YEAH officially on the Perth radar, and the Agents made great debutantes. If the first event is anything to go by, we have an awesome year ahead of us!
